Gencom Technology completes upgrade of Media Niugini Limited’s EM TV studio and playout facilities at Boroko Papua New Guinea

EM TV launched its new state of the art production and play out facilities at Boroko, Papua New Guinea on 28 August 2009. Gencom Technology, as the system integrator on the project, was responsible for upgrading the 20-year-old analogue facilities and installing and training EM TV’s staff.

Ray Sanders, Gencom’s CEO, said, ‘ We were pleased to be involved in this project. EM TV and its staff are now using the latest technology to serve the people of Papua New Guinea. Gencom has a long association with Fiji TV who own EM TV, and providing this new technology further demonstrates Fiji TV’s commitment to ethnic broadcasters in the Pacific region.”

Gencom provided training for the new digital facilities as well as IT technology skills. Harris Corporation were also involved in commissioning the facilities and the training of EM TV staff. David Valois, Gencom’s Project Manager on the job said, ‘What we've been able to absorb gradually over 20 years, they are having to take in all at once. The lasting impression would be the team’s thirst to learn, their friendliness and willingness to help.’

Mr Ken Clark CEO of Media Niugini Limited who owns EM TV said, “The quality of Gencom and Harris Corporation’s work and their professionalism is beyond reproach. Our employees are absorbing the knowledge very effectively. The enthusiasm and excitement it has generated has been very positive.’

About EM TV
EM TV is a commercial television station in Papua New Guinea owned by Fiji TV through its subsidiary Media Niugini Limited. Until the launch of the National Television Service in September 2008, it was the PNG's only free to air television service.

The station commenced broadcasting in July 1987 in Port Moresby. In April 1988, the station opened relays in Lae, Mt. Hagen, Goroka, Arawa and Rabaul. The next year, the Post and Telecommunications Department (PTC) made a microwave bearer available for live transmission in Lae, Mt. Hagen, Goroka and Madang.

In November 1993, EM TV moved off the PTC's bearer, and transferred program distribution to a satellite system. The current satellite footprint allows the signal to be seen throughout PNG, and as far away as India, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.

Today, EM TV operates two transmitters in Port Moresby, and leases and maintains six downlink and retransmission centres in Lae, Rabaul, Mt Hagen, Goroka, Madang and Kavieng.
