Our experience in television systems is extensive and includes several 'turnkey' television stations as well as television studios, news suites, production control rooms, head-ends, outside broadcast vehicles and linking systems.

In addition to creating innovative facilities, Gencom provides its clients with on-going service and support to protect and maintain their investment into the future.

  • IPTV Playout centre for Telekom Malaysia

    Working with its Malaysian partner, Dagang Teknik, Gencom Technology (Gencom) was selected as Project Designer and Systems Integrator to supply a specifically engineered IPTV system to Malaysian residents through Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM).

    TM chose an IPTV solution as the simplest and most logical platform that would allow for rapid expansion from 22 to 30 and finally 50 channels.

    The site for a new playout centre was selected in Cyberjaya, south of Kuala Lumpur, a specialist communications systems location.

    In a project of this size and complexity, specialist suppliers were brought in and coordinated by Gencom to produce a seamless integration of the required technologies that would work on launch day and continue to work efficiently and effectively for the long term.

  • ESPN Star Sports, Singapore

    With a time-frame of only six weeks to build and commission ESPN's first HD production studio and control room to replace the existing second studio and PCR,there was no room for error for Gencom staff and contractors to bring the project in on time and get the station fully operational again. A combination of ESPN and Gencom supplied equipment was used in the fit-out and included Ensemble conversion equipment, Harris multiviewers, Pixel Power's Clarity graphics system, and Plura LCD screen monitoring.

    One year later ESPN asked Gencom back to upgrade their Studio 3 facilities and associated PCR for HD production.

  • NZ Parliament TV, Wellington

    The New Zealand Government commissioned Gencom to supply equipment and integration services for their heritage NZ Parliament building in Wellington. The television system was pre-built in our Auckland factory and then shipped to the site. The system comprises all video and acquisition equipment, two identical control rooms, a CAR and web streaming facilities.

    The cameras are linked to a Telemetric robotic pan and tilt system, which have a fibre connection back to the control rooms and CAR area. The Telemetric system integrates tightly with the cameras allowing a high degree of camera control through the Graphic User Interface and uses the same fibre to send the pan and tilt data and camera control to the camera end.

    The Telemetric computer control software is designed to automate control of camera positions, CCU control, Video Switcher DSK, Video Switcher Program/Preview busses, and Character Generator graphics, allowing a single operator to efficiently control the studio.

  • Television New Zealand (TVNZ) HD Upgrade

    This HD upgrade project, for TVNZ's Avalon Television Centre in Wellington, involved installation of a new HD capable infrastructure and Master Control Room. These new facilities enhanced and integrated the existing HD capable studio. The project involved new routers, distribution equipment, flat screen multiview monitoring and included all new furniture.

    Subsequently Gencom combined two unused Production Suites into one facility - the project required complete design, equipment supply and system integration.

  • Maori Television Service (MTS)

    This project involved the design and installation of a complete ‘turnkey' television station for the Maori Television Service in Auckland, New Zealand. The station has a large traditional studio and control room, a dedicated news studio; four edit suites, audio post-edit and graphics facilities, a central technical area and CAR. There is a large desktop operation incorporating a newsroom computer system, desktop browse and editing facility with video file management capability.

    As MTS has expanded Gencom has designed and installed a second production studio and control room for news and current affairs including a virtual studio set and robotic cameras. We have also rebuilt the Playout Suite to incorporate a second channel.

  • BBC News Bureaus - Washington DC and New York City, USA

    In 2003  The BBC approached Gencom to build a new bureau in Washington DC. We completely rebuilt the bureau into a state-of-the-art facility, the largest BBC news bureau in the world. It comprises five digital radio studio/control rooms, a manned studio and Master control room, an automated TV Studio and a newsroom that can accommodate 40 journalists. There are also three edit suites and a large record bank for monitoring and recording the many outside feeds from CNN, NBC, ABC and other broadcasters; and for playing out feeds to London and around the world.  3 months later Gencom built the BBC's New York City news bureau. This comprised a sophisticated newsroom; digital radio studio, record bank and two edit suites. Design, documentation, furniture manufacturing and some pre-build wiring were all carried out in our Auckland factory.

  • Telecom New Zealand National Contribution Video Network

    Telecom New Zealand needed to provide a national contribution video network for two of its major clients - Television New Zealand (TVNZ) and the NZ Racing Board. This major project involved building an integrated broadcast network operating across eight New Zealand cities and included sites in urban and rural locations on both New Zealand's north and south islands.

    Gencom was able to demonstrate that it could create a comprehensive network that would serve several client's who all had differing criteria - including bandwidths, service and latency requirements. The project presented many challenges in terms of merging a number of state-of-the-art technologies to achieve the unique result required by Telecom within the two-month roll out time frame.

  • Television New Zealand (TVNZ) Channel 7

    TVNZ approached Gencom to build an easy to operate, low cost studio for a new dedicated news channel. The brief was for as much automation as possible so that minimum staff numbers were required and set-up was simple. We came up with a system based on the Ross Video, overdrive automation system. Overdrive enabled vision mixer, audio mixer and camera automation so that a single presenter/producer could run the studio totally unassisted. This also meant considerable cost saving for the channel, which has a very tight operating budget. The studio was completed on time and on budget.

  • Outside Broadcast Vehicles

    Gencom is often approached to produce custom-built outside broadcast vehicles. OSB NZ recently contracted us to provide three semitrailers and one rigid truck. For Moving Pictures, we produced a 14.5 metre semitrailer and Fiji TV needed a six metre outside broadcast van. On all these mobile control room projects Gencom was responsible for the overall design, construction and project management.

  • NZ Racing Board Up-linking Project

    As part of NZ Racing Board's requirement to link live content back from 73 racetracks around New Zealand to the new Avalon facility, Gencom was asked to provide five portable satellite up-links on both C and KU Bands.

    These systems - built by Gigaset - are deployed with five OB trucks and down linked to three NZ Racing Board sites - Avalon Studios in Wellington, NZ Racing Board headquarters in Petone and their Te Rapa site.

    This project was carried out in a very short timeframe and after completion allowed low cost, flexible linking from anywhere in New Zealand to the NZ Racing Board.

  • EMTV Papua New Guinea

    EMTV is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fiji Television in Suva. Fiji TV, a longstanding Gencom client, commissioned us to design and conduct a complete digital rebuild of EMTV's twenty-five year old analogue facility.

    Gencom partnered with Harris to provide an integrated technology solution that included a new studio and playout system as well as ingest and editing suites. The entire facility was rebuilt and tested in Gencom's Auckland factory and shipped to Papua New Guinea for re-assembly, final commissioning and training.

  • Indigenous Broadcasters

    Over the years Gencom has worked with indigenous broadcasters in New Zealand and throughout the Pacific - Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Tahiti. We have also been involved in similar projects in Africa and parts of Asia. Gencom recognises that these broadcasters are integral to preserving indigenous culture and language and that these groups have a perennial struggle finding funding and gaining recognition in their markets.

    In March 2008 Gencom co-sponsored the first World Indigenous Broadcast Conference in Auckland, New Zealand. It was inaugurated and hosted by Maori Television one of Gencom's long-term clients.

  • ABC, Brisbane Accommodation Project (BAP)

    Gencom assisted the ABC with design, system integration and technology supply for this substantial project.

    It included.
    • 20 Radio Studios both Production and Transmission
    • 1 TV Studio plus associated Control Room
    • 8 TV Edit Suites
    • 55 Rack Master Equipment Room
    • 100 sq M Content Distribution/ Ingest Area
    • Massive Production Studio/ Control Room for the QSO
    The transition project also involved moving existing ABC equipment into the purpose built building located in the Brisbane South Bank precinct. Throughout the project the ABC had to maintain normal transmission services.

    Building delays caused by Queensland’s worst flood necessitated the need for a pre wire operation in Auckland and additional crew on the ground in Brisbane. But, despite the major interruptions caused from the flood the relocation was completed in time without taking the ABC off air. News transmission commenced from the building on the 9th January 2012.


  • Auckland University of Technology

    Gencom was selected to manage the move of AUT’s School of Broadcasting to a new building on the school’s main campus in Auckland in late 2012. The project consisted of decommissioning, reinstalling, and recommissioning of existing equipment as well as installation of new systems. In total, the new facility consists of three TV studios, 2 radio studios, two performance theatres and a news studio. The timetable for installation was extremely tight, being planned to coincide with the Christmas break period between academic terms. Additionally, the need to support digital media technology and workflows provided an added layer of complexity. Gencom helped the university navigate technology options and incorporated IP routing, touchscreen interfaces, and remote-controlled cameras alongside the traditional technology. Gencom delivered on time and the client was very happy with the result.

  • Eden Park Superscreen

    Gencom delivered 3 projects into the Eden Park Redevelopment in 2010 as part of the preparations for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, including installation of two 12m x 10m LED Super Screens with associated power, monitored ventilation and control systems; a complete digital signage solution, displaying game content, advertising, and concession menus throughout the facility; and a central control room to manage everything. Close coordination was required with Fletcher’s construction, as the facility was undergoing a number of upgrades simultaneously.

    The largest project was the installation of two 12m x 10m LED Super Screens, including the power distribution (100KVA per screen), monitored ventilation and control systems. Gencom worked closely with Fletchers Construction, the civil works contractor on the site, to ensure that the support structures were prepared precisely to the required tight tolerances to allow the correct alignment of all of the screen modules as they were installed. The timeframe was very tight, there had been a lot of delays in the lead up to the screen installation and the Gencom window of opportunity had become very narrow. The delivery of all of the heavy components – electrical, ventilation, air filtering, screen elements and control systems was precisely managed to ensure the optimum use was made of the time available. Despite foul weather and a number of other detrimental external factors, the Gencom delivery was perfectly managed, and the screens were commissioned ahead of schedule. The customer was able to use the screens for games at the stadium ahead of the most optimistic requests, earning us undying respect and gratitude from the client.

  • Mobile Digital Breast-Screen Units

    Mobile Digital Breast-Screen Units

    Gencom Technology has long experience building highly customised vehicles for television broadcasting applications - ranging from small electronic newsgathering vans to large semitrailers that are complete mobile video production facilities. Because of this experience, we were first approached in 2009 by the Waitemata District Health Board (Auckland NZ) to design and build a fully digital mobile breast-screening clinic to serve women in New Zealand's rural Northland. The project is part of a national initiative to improve women's health by providing free annual breast examinations to women nationwide between the ages of 45 and 69.

    The project brief was to design and build a mobile clinic that would provide all the amenities of a modern healthcare facility in a 14-metre semitrailer that would be capable of traveling over mountainous terrain and poor, unsealed roads, without damaging the highly sensitive digital mammography equipment. In addition to the room where the actual scanning takes place, the unit would include a welcoming reception and waiting area, two change rooms, a private waiting area, and a staff room complete with kitchen.

    The DHB selected and contracted with the mammography equipment supplier, but everything else was managed by Gencom, including:

             Design and construction of the chassis and shell 

             design of the interior layout, including equipment & furniture placement, electrical & network distribution, HVAC and plumbing

             fabrication and installation of all systems

             coordination with the equipment supplier to allow installation and commissioning to take place at Gencom's facility

    Advanced technology supplied by Gencom included:

             Unibody fiberglass composite shell, originally designed for refrigeration trucks, that provides extra insulation as well as extra rigidity and protection from leaks

             Satellite link for delivering X-ray images to a specialist in a major hospital

             Generator to enable full operation of the unit in areas where mains power is unavailable

             Electric wheelchair lift to provide disability access

             Self-levelling landing legs

    Unlike with many of Gencom's broadcasting projects, the customer stakeholders were not engineers and technologists; and could be shy and apprehensive about working with so much technology. Plus, many would be women of varying age and ethnic backgrounds, who would be calling the unit "home" for weeks at a time and operating in very remote areas. Finally, the patients who would be visiting the facility were also of diverse backgrounds and might also be shy and apprehensive about their visits. So the systems needed to be as easy to use as possible as well as reliable, and the facility needed to be welcoming, friendly, and comfortable for all. Gencom's team rose to the challenge, creating a design that met the aesthetic needs of these women whilst at the same time incorporating robust technical solutions for the first mobile digital breast screening facility in New Zealand. In order to ensure that the design met these goals, Gencom involved customer stakeholders at each stage of the process, presenting a range of option for wood, upholstery, and surface finishes and even constructing a wood and cardboard mock-up of the unit so that end users could get a feel for how everything would work together.

    The Waitemata District Health Board project manager, Ms. Moira McLeod, said Gencom's team rose to the challenge. "We sat down with Gencom, working through a high level brief, detail by detail. We wanted to provide an environment where women would want to come and would feel safe. It had to be a pleasant, woman-friendly environment, right down to the colour scheme. A lot of time was on the design of the reception area, the first point of contact. They also had to be mindful that the staff would be away for weeks at a time, so it was very important to create a work friendly environment. I found Gencom's team very professional to deal with and very open to listening to client needs. They came up with an elegant solution."

    Gencom's commitment to delivering an exceptional solution did not end with completion of the vehicle. According to Ms. McLeod, "Any problems they were right there. And their support continued. They did not walk away when the project was finished. They've continued to touch base, to be there when we needed some support settling everything in."

    Before the first truck was even delivered, planning was already underway for a second vehicle to serve the rural areas closer to Auckland. This vehicle was a near-twin of the first, and rolled out just a few months later. The two vehicles proved highly successful, and became a model for other District Health Boards to follow as they contemplated upgrading their existing units to Digital.

    In 2012, the New Zealand government mandated that by the end of 2013 all mammography systems must be fully digital, as the analog film that the older systems relied on was becoming harder to come by and more expensive to process. With Gencom's proven track record, we were the natural candidate to deliver these upgrades.

    Counties Manukau was the next DHB to turn to Gencom. While the Waitemata units were the first ones Northland had seen, CMDHB already had an older, analog unit on the road. A third party transport engineering specialist was brought in to evaluate the condition of the trailer, and finding it to be in good shape a decision was made to refurbish this unit rather than construct a new one. Gencom was asked to provide a complete interior refit, while mechanical refurbishments would be carried out by another supplier. This approach required careful coordination between Gencom and the third parties.

    Gencom used lessons learned on the previous projects to deliver a unit that provided the same reliability and comfort of the Waitemata ones, while addressing CMDHB's requirements. According to Kathy Pritchard, Programme Manager for Breast-Screen Counties Manukau, "the Gencom team was great to work with. Because we had visited the Waitemata trailers and had spoken with those teams, we had a good idea of what we wanted. However as we cover a smaller, more suburban area, our needs were different. The project team worked closely with us to evaluate our options, and together we came up with a design that was suited to our needs and budget."

    Gencom has subsequently managed a steady stream of breast-screen trailer projects for regional organizations throughout New Zealand, including Hutt Valley DHB, Waikato DHB, Breast-Screen South (covering half of the South Island), and Waikato DHB. Each of these has had its own unique requirements, and challenges. For example, Waikato selected mammography systems from Siemens that provide greater imaging precision, but require temperature and humidity to remain within very strict tolerances. Gencom developed a customised controller unit for the HVAC and generator to ensure that these tolerances are maintained. For Breast-Screen South, whose territory includes some of the most extreme terrain in New Zealand, the composite fibre-glass shell used in the Waitemata builds provides extra insulation and weather resistance; but the rough roads required extra attention to the chassis and suspension.

    As of late 2013, an additional new trailer for Mid Central DHB is in the final stages of construction at Gencom's facility; and we are preparing to receive the last analog unit on the road, which covers central Auckland, for refurbishment. By the end of 2013, 9 of the 10 mobile breast-screen units on the road in New Zealand will be Gencom designs. The remarkable success of this programme has demonstrated Gencom's commitment to excellence not just in the Broadcasting field, but across a range of areas where our core competencies in Engineering, Design, and Project Management and our specialised skills in AV and mobile systems differentiate us from other contractors.

  • Nepean Hospital

    The Director of Intensive Care at New South Wales’ Nepean Hospital had received a grant to establish an education centre for the Intensive Care department. The facility was to consist of a medical simulation room in the Intensive Care Unit, equipped with the ability to send live video feeds from the bedside; as well as two Cardiac Ultrasound procedure rooms, similarly equipped. The simulation room was to include an adult mannequin to simulate physical responses.

    The feeds needed to include 2-way audio communication, 2 channels of video output (camera plus telemetry) and return video. The main floor of the education centre included 2 lecture theatres, the simulation room and the main control room (multimedia).

    Understanding the Hospital’s need to move away from the standard but inflexible automated DVI video systems commonly proposed by Commercial AV integrators, Gencom suggested a “broadcast standard” alternative which provided the flexibility required. The project was implemented and completed within the confines of a fixed budget through excellent project consultancy and design followed by dedicated project management by Gencom. The team were able to address the scope and design of project with customer to fit the budget.

    The desired outcome was a jewel in the crown of Nepean Hospital, that would put the hospital on the world stage.


  • New Zealand Police

    The New Zealand Police has recently been implementing several initiatives designed to improve officer responsiveness and efficiencies as well as the organisation's ability to prevent crime through better uptake and use of technology. Police have been deploying mobile technology including iPhones and iPads to officers throughout the country, providing staff with easier access to information while also enabling command centres to more easily monitor activities in the community, direct resources and communicate more effectively with frontline staff.

    In order to make the best use of this technology, Police have built a series of District Command Centres throughout the country. One of the most advanced is in Auckland City District where Gencom Technology has designed and installed an advanced automated video wall system. Gencom was asked to design a solution for the Auckland DCC that would make switching between multiple sources and views of various feeds, fast and simple.

    Using an iPad as a graphical touch screen interface, the AMX controller can switch eight sources from four computers to any of the 8 screens, expanding feeds to fill four screens when necessary. With an integrated KVM switcher, control of those computers can be transferred among operator stations at the same time. Outputs from the DCC can be fed to two meeting rooms, one with an interactive projector set up.

    According to Peter Wallace, the Gencom Project Manager in charge of the effort, “the client had an initial idea and Gencom developed and refined it as the project proceeded. In the end a very complex system has been made very easy to operate and the client was thrilled with the results.”
    Gencom has since deployed a similar system for the Waitemata DCC, and continues to work with police to enhance their capabilities throughout the country.
  • NZ Racing Board Goes Trackside in Style

    The NZ Racing Board televises hundreds of live racing events every year from race tracks all over the country.  Many of these events require a separate television production for the on-course audience watching the large outdoor screens.


    This led to the NZRB issuing an RFP in 2012 for the supply of an Outside Broadcast Unit to service events on the South Island.

    Gencom was selected from a number of System Integration specialists around Australasia as the NZRB’s preferred local partner, and worked with them from the outset to help define the function and form of the vehicle both operationally and technically.  A key challenge was developing a design to accommodate a fully-functional four camera operation in a confined space. Gencom’s previous experience in building OB vehicles of all sizes, was instrumental in achieving a successful outcome.

    Gencom has been a long term technology partner of the Racing Board, having completed many projects over the last decade, and their track record gave us the confidence to engage them again,” says NZRB’s Gavin Richmond.

     Ross Video products comprise the core systems used, with the Carbonite 2MLE Vision switcher, Ross Open gear terminal equipment and the Ross NK router.

     NZ Racing Board now has a dedicated digital OB facility that is flexible enough for use as the “Big Screen” production unit, or to provide full race coverage for dogs, horses and other special events.

    According to Richmond, “The outcome has been fantastic; we are very impressed with the build quality and value for money that we have achieved.  We have probably ended up with a facility that is more capable and of higher spec than we ever envisaged with the budget that we had. We are very pleased with the result.”


  • Waitemata Health Authority- Digital Mammography Trailer

    Gencom was approached by WHA to manufacture a 14 meter trailer, with all the comforts of a normal hospital as well as a sophisticated, highly specialized digital imaging system.

    Gencom worked closely alongside WHA to;

    • Develop the conceptual workflows from ground up and produce a proposed trailer design.
    • Produce all detailed system design and documentation.
    •  Supply and procure all materials and products for the installation.
    • Pre-build, and test the system offsite at Gencom’s Albany factory.
    • Complete the build on site, and integrate into WHA data centre.
    • Provide all commissioning and training and support.

    With our world class design centre and factory in Auckland, we had all the right resources to integrate the first digital breast screening mobile trailer in New Zealand. It was comprised of a reception area, change rooms, x-ray equipment, UPS, Generator, Air conditioned units and a fully wired electrical fit out.  

    The new mobile facility, which made its debut in July, will help extend health care outreach to rural areas and provide an additional 700 breast screening appointments annually in the Rodney area. By using the latest in digital breast screening technology, the screening process is made shorter and more convenient, as the image can be captured and reviewed immediately.

    All the projected goals were achieved and the client was very happy with our service. As the project progressed the client began to realise how important it was to work with professionals like Gencom. The many years of combined experience amongst the Gencom team added great value and we managed to meet their high expectations.
